It's been noticed that there are a lot of forums on the main index page lacking photos to the left of their titles. The images that already exist are for there for good, but any opinions for the neglected slots are definitely welcome. Let's work together, guys. It's looking a little sparse out there.

(Any of you who are artistically capable are encouraged to keep in mind the photos ability to be resized or cropped to incredibly small dimensions, If you just want to recommend a picture or general suggestion, that's fine. Someone else will take care of the potential ability to work with the given size limits)

I think that perhaps a photo of workers participating in a voluntary labor day in Cuba might work for LWHC... but.. I dunno if that would translate well to a small photo..

Maybe a picture of the Juche Tower for the DPRK forum.

I'm not sure, I'll see what I can do.

Excellent idea. Are you interested in resizing that to see if it works? I'm trying to pick out the artists amongst us.

Would this work for the Red Army forum?

Image

It's one that, imo, doesn't come off as too militaristic or likely to scare people into thinking we're a bunch of lunatic Red Alert Communists/Sovietophiles with military fetishes (I mean, we're already called Soviet-Empire.com, so I feel like we could tone it down a bit
), because it seems to me to at least have a somber tone. I suck at photoshop, but I could try if someone told me the sizes and other details about what is needed.

The other one I thought might work for Red Army would be this one, but it feels like it would give off some of the qualities that I mentioned above. Plus given the relative position of the soldier and the people standing behind him and the red star w/ sickle & hammer, it looks a bit harder to crop.

This should be the obvious USSR forum choice:

I would have thought images of faces would be the obvious choice for some of those threads - if you pick a suitable image it can be recognized even at a rather small scale. These images are tiny don't forget.

for example:

Communism: Marx

Communist Literature: Engels

Back in the U.S.S.R. (life in the East): Brezhnev

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics: Uncle Joe

People's Republic of China: Mao

Socialist Republic of Vietnam: Uncle Ho

Democratic People's Republic of Korea: Uncle Kim

Republic of Cuba: The Beard

Warsaw Pact States: Ceauşescu the impaler

Other States: Tito

The Red Army: Zhukov (or a generic soldier in uniform)

Others:

Memorabilia: The Berlin Wall

The Dustbin of History: Trostky (it's his phrase after all)

Communist Parties & the Communist Movement: A crowd shot from one of those mass gymnastics displays.

Communist Art: some recognizable statue

Music: how about someone like Paul Robeson?

I might have missed a couple, but I think that's most of them.

I dunno - that's what I reckon. I realize individual people are controversial, but they are much more recognizable.

This.

Yeah, knowing the dimensions could be sort of helpful. I honestly don't know them myself and Fox hasn't been on much so I guess that's kind of on hold. For now I guess we should just continue posting ideas. You guys have come up with some awesome ones so far.

That's an interesting idea with the faces. But you're right, it could be slightly controversial because, as it's become quite obvious lately, no one here can really agree on anything lol.

On my browser the images seem to be about 50x50 pixels, but I don't know if it's the same for everyone.

This image is imbedded in the front page:

It appears to be the same for me. I guess that's what we should use until we hear otherwise.

I have my browser zoomed out so everything is all weird for me.
Post 23 Sep 2011, 02:18
Following the 50X50 format above, this was done in short notice:

Meh, dunno if this would work so well as a forum icon, but it's there... Maybe someone can make a clearer pic out of what I posted earlier.

And the other one:

Not really a forum icon, but might come in handy for us mods the next time we have to lock a thread!

Sure I could try resizing it. Also this might be a good picture for Communist Parties & The Communist Movement.

It's not as if we don't talk about him quite a bit here though.
And I kind of thought the Stalinists would like the idea of putting him in the Dustbin anyway.

What about a picture of the sheet music for The Internationale for music? That's what I was thinking. Like below:
Image

And I was thinking perhaps Honecker or Ulbricht for Warsaw Pact states.
Post 23 Sep 2011, 04:51
^ I'd be for that for the Music section.
Post 23 Sep 2011, 05:24
I think the music notes would be kind of indescribable. Hmm..
Post 23 Sep 2011, 05:45
I don't want to criticize people ideas - I know mine were probably somewhat controversial, but:

The sheet of music will probably look like a "dull grey blur" at 50x50 pixels. One bar of music would probably be too much at that scale:

Hmm. I don't know. I doubt anybody would recognize it.
