Explosives Seized at Home of Posada's Attorney
Havana, April 13 (ACN) Explosives were found in the Caracas residence of Joaquin Chaffardet, a defence attorney for terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, after a five-hour search by nine officers of the Military Intelligence Directorate (DIM) in the presence of seven witnesses.
International terrorist Posada Carriles, who was recently released on bail by a US Federal Court in El Paso, Texas, is wanted in Venezuela for several crimes including the mid-flight sabotage of a Cuban airliner in 1976 that killed 73 persons.
The authorities found C-4 explosives, a detonating cable and a document from a Venezuelan Air Force general asking for Chaffardet's support to denounce President Hugo Chavez and former Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel for several crimes, reports Granma newspaper.
Venezuela has requested the United States extradite Posada to stand trial for the plane bombing. Posada escaped from a Venezuelan prison in 1985.
Panamanian Foreign Minister Samuel Lewis recalled that Posada Carriles had been tried in Panama for planning an assassination attempt against Cuban President Fidel Castro.
In Madrid, the committee to release the Cuban Five denounced the possibility that Posada be freed on orders of the Bush administration. The Cuban Five have been imprisoned for more than eight years in the US for uncovering terrorist plots against the island planned by groups based in Miami, Florida.
