The Spetznatz have the audacious Putin to direct them on occasion, remember when he used them to go into the Yukos HQ and seize tax papers? How cool was that?! SEALs are shit, haven't you seen Under Seige!?

Seriously, I wouldn't know who would win of the two, but the Russian military is now underfunded quite drastically, so i'm guessing the SEALs would win. Are you asking about solely the Spetznatz vs. the SEALs, or using their tactical backups (artillery, aircraft...)?

I know, the SEALs are very good of course, and they have the technology and the power, but the Spetsnaz are good too. I'm talking of the combat technique, determination etc...

First of all, it is 'Spezialnaye Naznacheniya'!

Secondly, I don't think that the Spetsnaz were ever as specialised as the SEALs. Spetsnaz are more compatible with the US Special Forces battalions ('Green Berets') or Rangers - elite infantry. Also, the Spetsnaz carry out insurgency behind enemy lines, which none of these standard US forces does - Spetsnaz is special in that respect.

SEALs are more comparable to the Russian 'DELFIN' detachements of the Navy and the graduates of the 'Saturn' school for naval experts.

SEALs have more audicious training than the Spetsnaz so they might be 'better' - but it is very subjective when it comes to special forces. That said, Spetsnaz are much more versatile IMO.

US Army Rangers carry out insurgency behind enemy lines if you knew anything about the US Military you would know that. Comparing which SF unit is better is ludicrious its impossible they are highly trained and unlikely to ever face each other in any situation. Being a former mod of a Military forum this question came up so much and got closed down just as quickly because there is no way to prove either way. Special Operations types are typically quiet professionals and don't brag about their capabilities so I find it pathetic for others to brag for them.

My mistake. No need to go on the offence, though!

And as far as I know the Spetsnaz do much longer range insurgency - ie civilian clothes insurgency into a peaceful country, where they act more like sleeper agents. I didn't know the Rangers did that.

And I agree it is ludicrous to compare which one is better as it is harder to compare the capabilities of humans (I say impossible) - you can do it with technology, as technology behaves in a pretty similiar way in all situations, but a human is much different.

However, this comparison itself is ludicrous as both teams carry out much different roles.

Actually Delta would probably be the closest to the Spetsnaz in roles but thats stretching it the US really hasn't developed a good insurgency unit maybe because we just like to pommel the hell out of people with line units.
Rangers go downrange but they use foreign military issued clothing and weapons and such if its a black op. Also the SEALs primary mission is naval interdiction and demolitions.....so I agree with Red Star they are not even the same based unit as the Spetsnaz.

Thanks for the info on the Rangers. I did not believe that they carried out such operations. I thought that Spetsnaz were really the only unit (army special forces that is) to carry out quasi-spy operations.

SEALs. Russian military does not have the:
1) Funds
2) Numbers
3) Combat experience
The Americans do. Most of all, of course, numbers.

Then again, the two units have different purpose. A more close comparison would be Marines and Russian Десант ("Desant")

chechnya was pretty much the only major war Russia was in. USA was in Iraq, Vietnam, Korea War, etc. You get the point right? I said they dont have the numbers cause the military is so underfunded not many people want to join, and some even leave. American military is much more well funded.
