A Russian prosecutor said Wednesday the identities of all involved in the slaying of a Vietnamese student last October are now known, will the trial to follow in May 2005.

Nine of the 14 assailants arrested in February, all 14 to 18 years, confessed to attacking the victim with knives and disposing of the weapons in a river, said St Petersburg prosecutor Sergei Zaitsev.

The weapons will be retrieved from the river once the melt comes in the spring, he said.

More arrests likely

Investigators said that at least ten more arrests could come, according to the prosecutor, who promised severe punishment to the fullest extent of the law for all who are guilty.

The gang of teenagers initially planned to attack a trader from Azerbaijan, the investigators said.

Vietnamese student Vu Anh Tuan was killed in Lev Tolstoy Street in central St Petersburg on the night of October 14, 2004.

The group of teenagers, believed to be “skinheads,” attacked him when he was returning home after a visit to his friends.

The student tried to flee, but the attackers, armed with knives, repeatedly stabbed him to death.

Skinheads stabbed Vietnamese student to death in Russia

A 20-year-old Vietnamese student was stabbed to death in the Russian city of St. Petersburg, police said Oct 14, while witnesses said the attackers were racist-type skinheads.

Police said Vu Anh Tuan's body was found with at least five knife wounds after a group of 15 to 20 youths attacked him late Oct 13, Reuters reported.

Students who witnessed the stabbing said the attackers wore semi-military uniform, leather jackets and boots, and had shaven heads.

Tuan was studying at the St. Petersburg Polytechniques University, according to news website VnExpress.

Around 100 Vietnamese students gathered at the murder scene to protest against the killing and demand protection from the police against racist attacks, which are linked to a growing number of fascist and racist organizations.

"We came to study in this country, which we thought was a friend of Vietnam. We do not have drunken fights, we do not steal, we do not sell drugs and we have the right to protection from bandits," said one demonstrator.

Prosecutors said 15 people have been arrested, but it is immediately unclear whether any of the attackers are among the arrested.

Tuan’s death was at least the fourth racist-type murder in Russia this year. A nine-year-old Tajik girl was stabbed to death in broad daylight in St Petersburg in February. Earlier a student from Guinea-Bissau and an Afghan trader were killed in other cities.

Reuters cited “some estimates”, saying that “St Petersburg has as many as 20,000 racist extremists.”

Two Vietnamese students attacked in Moscow

Two Vietnamese students in Moscow were seriously injured, one in serious condition, after being assaulted by a group of strangers with knives and clubs Dec. 25.

The victims, sophomore Nguyen Hoang Anh and junior Nguyen Tuan Anh of the Moscow Energy Institute (MEI), were on the way back to their dormitory when they were attacked.

After the incident, the victims were hospitalized and underwent operations, said Nguyen Van Thang, secretary of the MEI’s Vietnamese Youth Union.

Hoang Anh regained consciousness the evening of Dec. 26. He suffered almost 30 knife cuts all over his body, but was in stable condition after the operation, doctors said. However, the other victim, Tuan Anh, is still unconscious and remains in serious condition. He had been hit over the head and suffered heavy brain injury, said doctors.

The Vietnamese community in Moscow has raised money to pay hospital fees for the two students. MEI representatives and many Vietnamese students have also kept watch by their bedsides.

Skinheads

Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Nguyen Van Nganh said that the embassy would consult with Russian agencies and demand the Russians take necessary measures to guarantee the safety of Vietnamese students studying in Russia.

The Vietnamese embassy in Russia has been working with MEI to investigate the incident. Local police reportedly interrogated Hoang Anh after he regained consciousness.

According to the Vietnamese students in Moscow, the neighborhood of MEI’s dormitory is very insecure. An African student was also attacked by skinheads in the area three weeks ago, they said.

As a result, the students have lived in constant fear. Most only go out in large groups or avoid social contacts altogether. Some newcomers even quit studying in Russia to return to Vietnam.

Last October, Vu Anh Tuan, a Vietnamese first-year student at the Polytechnic University in St. Petersburg, was stabbed to death by a group of 14 to 15 aggressive youngsters believed to be “skinheads”.

Russian authorities said motivation for the case might not have been “racial”. St. Petersburg police’s probe has so far been in vain.
