Greetings.

I am a communist, as you might imagine, from the UK. I have come here specifically to learn about Stalinism or "Marxism-Leninism" as it is commonly known, as well as other nationalistic forms of communism (I am currently opposed to them as Stalin seems to have been a horrible Marxist, what with his nationalistic approach to socialism amongst other things including criminlisation of homosexuality).

Currently I would call myself a Leninist, although I have some leanings towards Trotskyism. I also have a deep interest in the Frankfurt school, Marxist-Humanism, Freudo-Marxism and other schools of Marxism, including forms of Left Communism that are not hostile to Lenin like Bordigism. I am a novice all things considered however, but as I said I came here specifically to study Stalinism as that seems to be the most favoured thing here, although I have spotted a number of Brezhnevites, Strasserists and Left-wing nationalists.

That's all I think needs to be said. If my tone sounds hostile, it isn't supposed to be; I just have an anti-Stalin bias currently, one which could change, but my dislike of Brezhnev, Castro, Kim-il Sung and the like are not likely to change.

Of the actually active we are mostly normal marxist-leninists by and large (although this is certainly a conservative community among leftists I would say).

Welcome to S-E comrade. I am always around and I will particilate in your threads so please, ask away.

My friend, only a man who doesn't know Brezhnev can hate Brezhnev.

Also, Stalin wasn't really a 'nationalist' according to its most commonly accepted definition, but he did promote the idea of 'socialist patriotism' and nation-based cultural identity.

Welcome!

In relation to the Brezhnev comment, what little I do know I don't like. The Brezhnev doctrine is utterly imperialistic. Brezhnev's politics seem like a watered down Stalinism combined with Khrushchev's capitalistic reforms. There was very little Marxism in the SU at that time too, which is evident even to laymen of Marxism and Leninism. All I know is I'd probably hate living under Brezhnev, what with homosexuality being about as popular as it was during 1658, and he doesn't seem to have been much of an... intelligent man, to say the least. Also private property.

Stalin wasn't a nationalist by the right-wing definition no, but he saw it fit to restrict the socialist revolution to one area of the globe; it seems Trotsky, even if he would've been more aggressive, might've been able to spread the revolution further into Asia and united the countries that were founded on socialist principles into one instead of them keeping their borders and all that. But that is little more than counter-factual historical masturbation so...

What makes you, personally, like Brezhnev? He didn't exactly elevate class struggle or fight western imperialism very well.

Welcome to SE.

Brezhnev was a solid middle roader, not the brightest, but not an arrogant, know it all prick with a messiah complex a la Gorbachev.

Brezhnev's USSR left a lot to be desired, but achieved a great deal, at least in terms of making the USSR a powerful competitor to the West, without spilling over into bloodshed in the style of Stalin, or becoming a tabloid caricature as Krushchev was prone to do at times.

Rights for gay people weren't at a premium anywhere in the world in the 1970's, so we have all come a long way in this regard since then.

I'm a pretty conservative democratic Socialist by Socialist standards, and a desperate radical by bourgeois standards. Brezhnev, with a few updates and upgrades here and there, seems about ideal to me.

Welcome, communist mutant. The only 'crazy resident commie' here, lev. A convinced communist to the 'very depths of my soul'. May you always have a nice day!

Time magazine labelled the Brezhnev era as the period of stagnation. If only you know the technological history of the USSR during Brezhnev you will be amazed or stupefied. They got the first stealth plane technology which was stolen by the CIA and they got the best radars in the world which again were stolen by the CIA. If not for a certain Tolkachev, USA should have fallen down on her knees.

Here's a link about the most damaging mole in the history of USSR.
