Not sure where to put this, so if it's in a wrong place, please move it.
There's a wealth of marxist texts online in various forms, so how about we do a "commie bookclub". Basically we'd select a text, read it together and then discuss it. Might be interesting, might be pointless, but is anyone up for it? Soviet America is Free America!
Under communism, there is no freedom; you are not free to live in poverty, be homeless, to be without an education, to starve, or to be without a job
Sounds like a plan.
Although this should probably be in the Communist Literature forum. The moment one accepts the notion of 'totalitarianism', one is firmly locked within the liberal-democratic horizon. - Slavoj Žižek
I'm down. We should start with something light.

Yeah, i'm up for it, could do with reading everything again and at least changing how I see things and how each of you sees things. Thankfully it's all online for free.
I hope people will get on board with my other idea of the Communal SE Library next year too, will be pwn. ![]() "Phil Spector is haunting Europe" -Dr. Karl H. Marx

Anyone have a suggestion for a text to start with?
Criteria is.. must be available online or as a download, must be available in english, and obviously should be socialist/communist in nature. Do we want to start with something fairly heavy or pretty basic ? Special topics of interest? Soviet America is Free America!

Why not start with Bukharin's "The ABC of Communism"?
It's quite lenghty however everyone should be able to finish it in a week... http://www.marxists.org/archive/bukhari ... /index.htm Loz wrote: yeah, that's a very good baseline text. Also a lot easier to digest than Das Kapital We can always break it up and do a chapter at a time. WHat does the rest think ? Soviet America is Free America!

The "ABC's of Communism" sounds good with me.

The idea's been tried before, iirc last time we did Jack London's Iron Heel. Also all texts have to be online.

Okay, no dissenting votes so let's start with the abc of communism.
Think people can do sections 2 and 3 by monday? They aren't monstrously long (section 1 is their political programme which isnt very exciting) Soviet America is Free America!

Is the reading project still going on???
If so: I'd like to join. BTW: Choosing Nikolai Bukharin is interesting - he probably is one of the most serious losses caused by Uncle Joe's purges. ![]() --- ![]()
It is, but I've had to wait until post holidays to do any serious reading.

Moved to a more appropriate forum.
To tell you the truth, I might appear knowledgeable of some or 'all' things communist, but I haven't read the biography of Joseph Stalin which I intend to be on my next reading list. I expect him to be 'profound, exacting and humane' in my readings.

Bump!
I know we're nearing the holidays and all of that, but is anyone up for this? I've read parts of ABC's and it's a pretty straightforward book. Should be interesting to exchange impressions. ![]() "It does not suffice to reject the error; we must overcome it, explain it and outgrow it." - Antonio Labriola Forum Rules
Personally, I'm disappointed this never happened. I'm totally up for this. I've got a few on the list, too.

I didn't take part in the first attempt, but it seems like a good book to start with, in a very general sense.
But if there are other suggestions, let's hear it. ![]() "It does not suffice to reject the error; we must overcome it, explain it and outgrow it." - Antonio Labriola Forum Rules |
