viewtopic.php?t=28560

Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We'll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we'll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They'll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E'er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we'll strike while the iron is hot.

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

This is the internationale, you're looking for the 1944 version and lyrics.

The Internationale has a more revolutionary fervour and is more rousing than the more conservative USSR anthem. I like the German and Spanish versions in particular.

The German version is the only one I know by heart. And I agree, the USSR's anthem is nice, but it just doesn't fill me with fire and spirit and fervour like the Internationale does. I mean, you just listen to it once and then you feel like you could smash the ruling class all by yourself.

I prefer the Internationale. I think the tune is better and the words are better. It reflects the internationalist aspirations of the early Soviet Union and could be converted to be the anthem of all communist countries and parties. I think it's great that wherever we communists are in the world we could sing that song and it would fit. That anthem reminds us that the USSR was a communist country – not simply a Russian country. It was a place where communists lived and worked – not just Russian who just so happened to be communists. However I do think that the later USSR's national anthem is the second best. Unfortunately it's been corrupted by the current Russian government who have no right to abuse that communist tune. How dare they reject us and then squat in the cultural space we left. That was our tune. We won that world war. Not them. After that comes the French one. Isn't that great! The words and the tune and the history of it are all so good. After that comes the German one, just because of the tune. The words are crap but it's still a bit rousing for none Germans! I think that the after that comes the Spanish one because you can't argue with it. But all other anthems’ I think sound a bit rubbish and the words are bad too. The British one is awful. I think that the Democratic Republic of Congo has a hilarious anthem. It's really great. Well that was my musings on National Anthems in general. I hope it interested someone.

I prefer the original Russian over the Internationale; but since I do not speak fluent Russian, or Russian enough to understand it all without translation, I prefer Paul Robeson's English adaptation. The words are different but, in a way, more relevant to today?

It's all opinion.

Putin only brought back the tune but had the original author of the anthem stick some feel-good Russian nationalism about GLORIOUS HOLY RUSSIA and shit into it. It's in many ways an affront to the original, which reflected the multinational nature of the world's first federative socialist country, and it is basically a way for the post-Soviet Russian government to try to look legitimate by stealing the anthem of the country that did the most to win the struggle against Fascism in Europe.

Internationale has better lyrics, while the music of the Soviet Hymn is more powerful, though a good performance of Internationale can dwarf the Soviet Hymn any time.

Shit, I'm saying this even after admitting to not being a communist, so you know I think these songs are awesome.

The siloviki clan. And he does what he's told. It's funny how many people outside Russia seem to think he's an autocratic ruler.

That's the conventional wisdom, but some sources claim that there is indeed a rift (a friendly one, so you won't be seeing Putin having Medvedev thrown in prison anytime soon, but one that exists nonetheless) between the two men, who have in recent years shown signs of public disagreements (the recent case of Libya, for instance). Not that it really matters. Medvedev, indeed, puts on a more young, reform-minded, "liberal" image, while Putin's tough guy image and appealing to Soviet nostalgia might be more attractive to older people, but also the more idealistic and/or nationalistic Russian youth. When you see through the whole act, though, both Medvedev and Putin are bourgeois politicians, and we all know that the oligarchs and their profit-oriented corporate interests and the current Russian government go hand in hand.

I agree. It's also funny how many people in the West think that he's a communist or left-wing, and trying to rebuild the USSR.
All the tough talk about building a new, stronger Russia and having KGB credentials don't mean shit in relation to socialism, people! (Not addressed to anyone on this site, of course.)
