Widespread Repercussions of Cuba’s Resounding Victory at the UN

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 26 (acn) The UN General Assembly ratified on Tuesday for 19 years in a row its condemnation of the US blockade against Cuba, which has caused the Caribbean island over 751 billion dollars’ worth of material damages.

During his speech, shortly after the announcement of the voting’s results, Bolivia’s
ambassador to the UN, Pablo Solon, said that 97.39 of the organization’s member nations declared themselves to be against the blockade.

For the French news agency AFP, the United States was left all by itself at the plenary session with the only support of its ally Israel.

In Brazil, the main news portals reflect the categorical rejection of the international community –at the UN General Assembly- towards the blockade.

Almost all countries in the world condemned once more the blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, reads a report by the German DPA news agency while referring to the voting at the UN to demand the end of the hostile imperial policy.

The agency echoed the words of Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, who mentioned that, according to recent surveys, 71 percent of US citizens champion the normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States.

In Caracas, the Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System announced that on Wednesday it will present at the entity’s Council its 2009-2010 Follow-up Report on the Implementation of the Extraterritorial Helms-Burton Law.

The demands of lifting the blockade were heard again on Tuesday at the UN General Assembly, states the Russian ITAR-TASS news agency, which adds that members of many delegations approached the Cuban FM to congratulate him personally.

Reuters, the British news agency, considers that the UN voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday in favor of lifting the anti-Cuban siege, and reproduces words by Rodriguez with respect to the fact that this policy of Washington has no ethical or legal foundation, credibility or support.

For the US AP news agency, the UN General Assembly condemned for the 19th time in a row the -(euphemistically called) US “embargo” against Cuba, when it asked to put an end to sanctions dating back to the days of the Cold War. It underlines words by the Cuban FM with regard to the fact that in 2010 the economic siege has strengthened and that its daily impact continues to be visible in all aspects of life in Cuba.

Notimex expressed that the UN General Assembly approved on Tuesday a resolution in which it asks once again the end of the blockade against the Caribbean nation.

On the voting on Tuesday at the UN, the Spanish and Chinese news agencies EFE and Xinhua, respectively, also reflected that the resolution against the US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba, in force for almost 50 years now, was approved by a large majority.

Doesn't matter, the U.S. doesn't listen to the U.N. General Assembly, because the U.N. General Assembly wont sanction the U.S.

It's good to see the sentiment is turned though

I'm unsurprised that Israel was the only country other than America to vote against this resolution and the countries of the world should press the US government to liberalise trade relations with Cuba, even though the US will most likely ignore concerns. The UNGA can pass these motions easily as two-thirds of the body consists of developing countries who will obviously side with Cuba but it's powerless against the US and lacks the ability to act on the situation.

I agree with Proletarian. Anyway, every time the UN pass a resolution like this, Cuba scores a victory. This shows the United States are getting more and more isolated.

More proof that the UN is a meaningless body except wherein it supports imperialism.

Out of curiosity does anyone have the numbers for previous votes? It would be interesting to see if the US had tried to get other states on board in the past, and to see a trend in declining numbers of nations voting along with it.

I don't have exact numbers, but every vote I've seen over the past few decades seems to be heavily in favor of Cuba. It used to be that the US could get right-wing Latin American dictatorships they supported to vote with them, but there aren't many of those anymore. IIRC, Israel has always supported the US on this issue, for obvious reasons.

Why is it that some small Oceanic countries either side with the USA or abstain? It's not like the US government cares much about the UN, so I guess they aren't buying their votes, but still.

Palau and Marshall Islands both used to be under control of the US and for all intents and purposes are still in their orbit. It doesn't require much to put them on their side, but still it is amusing to see them do that.

I find it sad to see the sell outs in the post-Communist nations- Albania and Uzbekistan- vote no though during the earlier years though.

It's interesting though to see more and more vote yes, less coming out of abstentions. It's not like the US cared much for the UN if it went against what it wanted though.
