Sublime Frequencies never disappoints:
Radio Pyongyang Definitely one of the best labels out there today. I also highly recommend Princess Nicotine (music from Myanmar), Omar Souleyman and Latinamericancarpet. ![]() "It does not suffice to reject the error; we must overcome it, explain it and outgrow it." - Antonio Labriola Forum Rules
I found one song from Radio Pyongyang and it seems a bit tasteless in my opinion because the DPRK restricts artistic expression, thus creating bland music such as this. If they relaxed the restrictions, a more diverse range of pop would be accessible to foreigners, like the Soviet Union did many decades ago with bands such as Ansambl Samotsvety.
There are no libertarians in dumpsters.
Almost all pop music is "bland".
American(or any other) pop-musicians have almost no restrictions on artistic expression, and they still make shitloads of bland, stupid and boring music every year. Loz wrote: That is true but it's due to the music industry which churns out rubbish pop bands and are orientated towards profit rather than artistic quality. Perhaps if we ban mass record labels and allow small, independent records, there would be an increase in quality of music. There are no libertarians in dumpsters.
Quote: You don't think the market is a restriction?
I know it is,of course, but i meant the "political" or "top-down" restrictions on artistic expressions that existed in the USSR for example.
Market favors and encourages(to a some degree) variety in musical styles, creating "subcultures" and whatnot to maximize profits and please all consumers. Bands can be pretty unconventional, and still be profitable.
Until you get publisher puppets like Justin Beiber
