Vostok-1 was launched with hero Yuri Gagarin, a cosmonaut from the Soviet Union. The Vostok 1 mission was the first time anyone had journeyed into outer space and the first time anyone had entered into orbit. The Vostok 1 was launched by the Soviet space program and designed by the Soviet rocket scientists Sergey Korolyov and Kerim Kerimov.

C'mon guys, I know this is a dead forum but SHEEEESH

Yeah, it's pretty sad how this event is absolutely ignored in the west, while every aniversary of the moon landing we have TV specials telling us how awesome it was (which is right). This was a great moment for the human race, and the 2-0 for the USSR in the Space Race.

You don't seriously buy that bullshit do you? America landed on the moon. Its like the one part they beat the soviets at and then pretended it was the entire goal but any conspiracy stops there.

The Boston Globe at least marked the anniversary with a photo gallery on the International Space Station.

Their Big Picture section is one of my favorite places of the internet, btw. Check out their selection of the Baikonur Cosmodrome, for example.
