In the 1970's, my Dad traveled through Europe and one of the places he visited was Yugoslavia. He took some pictures while he was there which he's given permission for me to post here. He traveled from the Italian border south to Macedonia where he entered Greece. There aren't as many pictures as I was hoping as he hitchhiked most of the way and couldn't just get out of the car and snap a shot whenever he saw something interesting. Something I noticed in particular was that the country didn't look any worse off than the Western European countries Dad visited at the same time.
For those who might be wondering if foreigners hitchhiking was allowed by the Yugoslav government, Dad and the English girl he was traveling with got picked up by two policemen in an unmarked car. All they wanted was to see their passports. The cops took down their names and drove them to a nearby campground where they could spend the night. It's possible they simply weren't enforcing the law, but that doesn't seem likely. Another interesting thing (which I may have mentioned on this site before) is that when Dad was taking the train from across the border from Italy, he noticed people were smuggling in consumer goods (portable radio's and the like). When the border guards were going through the train, it was obvious knew full well what was going on but did nothing about it. ![]() The capital: Belgrade. ![]() Countryside. I don't unfortunately. I'm not sure why Dad didn't take more. He spent a bit of time there with a Croatian he met on the train.
I think it's funny how the bourgeoisie desperately tries to tell us that each and every socialist state is/was a grey desert although every photo contradicts this.

since most pictures you'll find in your school books are black and white...

Fellow Comrade, you can click on your picture, and when you go to photobucket to view it, right click, properties, copy the link, paste it into your post, add IMG tags, copy and paste that link as many times as you have pictures, but change the number that comes just before the file type. This way we dont have to go to the photobucket pase, and can view it here, in full size. If the picture are to big, then you can find a way to modify the code you already have, so that there is still a thumbnail, but by cliking on it we can view the full size picture (and nothing else) offsite.

The picture size is bigger than the forum will allow and I don't want to resize them. I'm stuck with a very slow net connection at the moment. It took ages to upload those pictures.
Gods below Tito was badass.
Free market economics, a ruthless partisan campaign, a brow you can use to break rocks. Hell I even share a birthday with him. (not the year, that would be mental) Apparently he was quite into the "ladiz" well into old age too, I reckon he more than earned the top job in Yugoslavia. Sure old people have died in their droves from the bitter cold of the warmest january on record, and they practically rot in their hospital beds and our prime minister is incapacitated in office..
But God damn it Britain is getting the job DONE.
That's some excellent pictures you have shown there, Fellow Comrade and enjoyed looking at them. It's a shame that I can't make the same journey through the Iron Curtain as your father did, as the socio-economic system is different and it wouldn't have the same feel as before. It must have been cheap living there because the prices were kept low but you'll have to adjust to the shortages and inferior quality in goods but still it would have been a blast.
Naaah.Prices weren't that low(they weren't subsidized).Yugoslavia basically had a market economy.Wages were relatively low,and standard of living caught up (to some extent) with western world only in 70's.
There were no shortages untill 80'(but that's because imports were banned) Goods,on the other side, were relatively good in quality, except cars...
Yeah. Yugoslavia kind of defined "Socialist market economy". China really has no right to claim they are one, though.

small market was allowed, that's hardly any anarcho-capitalist free market economy. wages werent that high, true, but at least people could afford going abroad every few months or so on a vacation and workers had much more right then today. for an average industrial worker life before was much better, secure and happier than under semi-free market we have today.

Small market? I thought it was a usual market economy, as in any capitalist state, only with self-management.

the laws regarding market were more lax but it still wasnt free market economy. you could own a pub or a bakery store or a family company, but you couldnt create a multiconglomerate or something bigger.
