What are your opinions on Tito and Worker's Self-management? It seems like an alternate road to socialism, as opposed to the rigidly planned economy of the USSR. The means of production can be altered by dictatorship of the proletariat. Yet at the same time worker firms, can compete on the market.
Neither USSR central planning or Titoist self-management can be considered full socialism, but both offer possible transitions from capitalism to low socialism. Kamran Heiss

I generally have a positive opinion of Tito/Kardelj and their promotion of socialist autogestion as, I would argue, it provided a more decentralized alternative to the Soviet model without betraying Marxist ideals. The country was largely egalitarian, basic needs were met at low cost to the citizen, and the government still maintained a public distribution system and a fair deal of economic planning authority. Moris and some of our other Yugoslav comrades will probably have more details to add.
At the same time though, it is hard to tell how sustainable that model would have been, as competition among these self-managed enterprises naturally served profit over need, and could easily revert economic relations to a more capitalist mode that might have resembled 1970s Britain. ![]() "History is a set of lies agreed upon." --Napoleon Bonaparte
A farse comrade,"self-management" on paper
An anecdote form "self-contribution" action of a croatian factory(for the building of a new hospital in Zagreb) Worker's meeting Director:Comrades, who's in favor of giving our today's wage for the hospital 2 in favour,100 or so not Comrades,we won't go home until we vote this. Who's in favor? (90 in favor) Excellent comrades, congratulations.
I have been reading tons and tons of info about self-management and Yugoslavia over the last 3 to 4 months. It seems that there was no real market in Yugoslavia and that the state played a very large role in the economy. It is little different from the socialism of the USSR and the like, and the high economic growth can be attributed to the superiority of state-ish socialism.
I'm wrong or the so-called "Yugoslav socialist model" was also backed with tons of US/West money?
you are. money received was from more than one source, WP states included. then only time yugoslavia depended on western money was during the 1947-1952 informbiro crisis when yugoslav border posts were assaulted and army was gathering next to its border.

Western money did play a significant role in the first years,as Moris said, but later it became less and less important as Yugoslavia got more and more self-reliant.
See this,Yugoslavia's foreign debt was around 20 billion dollars in 1991(have in mind that the largest part of that money had been borrowed in the '79-'90 period). Poland's foreign debt was 23 billion $ by 1980. So,with roughly the same amount of credit,Yugoslavia was able to significantly develop it's industry, while Poland didn't. Western debt was not the main factor in the success of Yugoslav socialist model. Actually,Yugoslavia got into it's 10 year long economical crises only after the large wave of loans from the west taken in '78-'80. Shortly after that,USA released control of interest rates, and these quickly skyrocketed, creating huge problems for SFRY. Last edited by Loz on 13 Sep 2010, 15:20, edited 2 times in total.
oh yeah, one thing i forgot to mention; western money we received during the informbiro crisis was meant for the defence budget. this was what we received:
- symbolic aid of 9,5 million dollars from US, UK and france in 1950 during the period of famine and hunger - 128 million from UNICEF, CAR organization in 1951 (not western states) and some western military equipment not included in this amount - 102 million in 1952 in food and resources without any political conditions - 250 million dollar loan from the western states with 8% interest rate under the condition that we repay nationalisations (93,4 million altogether) - informbiro blockade and isolation costed us 550 million dollars which caused us a 195 million dollar deficit in 1951 Last edited by Moris on 13 Sep 2010, 16:25, edited 1 time in total.
