Chinese police have rescued more than 100 village children sold to work as slave labourers in the booming southern province of Guangdong.

The children, from the ethnic Yi minority, came from poor families in Sichuan about 600 miles ( 960 km) away.

The China Daily said 167 children had been rescued from the factory in the industrial city of Dongguan so far, and several arrests had been made.

China announced a nationwide crackdown on slavery and child labour last year.

It emerged that hundreds of poor farmers, children and mentally disabled people had been forced to work in mines and kilns in Shanxi province and neighbouring Henan.

China's 'dark side'

The BBC's Dan Griffiths, in Beijing, says the latest incident highlights the dark side of China's economic miracle, and according to unconfirmed media reports there may be more than 1,000 child labourers in at least one city in southern China.

Local newspapers said Communist Party leaders in Dongguan had told the police and labour departments to rescue all the children and punish those who trafficked them.

But they added that two of the rescued girls appeared reluctant to leave the site because of the hardships of their home village. (my bolding)

Hong Kong's Wen Wei Po paper reported that 107 boys and 60 girls had been taken into care by police.

Has the Chinese government said anything about this yet?

I dont understand that. It would be dark side if the government were doing nothing about it AND they knew about it.

But there not, and are obviousely taking this issue seriousely.[/quote]

Obviously because China is not a real Socialist country.

They are just a custom government that has alot of censorship.
They won't ever admit to their actions, and they never will. My evidence is; I've been to China and they censor almost everything that they don't like, and this has been found out a while ago and in many other cases. They won't ever admit to it.
China will fall into Democracy within 12 years.
The days of Mao have ended unfortionatly.
America has hypnotized the Chinese Market, and Government.

Anyways, I'm getting off topic, yeah they just don't admit to their wrongs.

Interesting. Tho it's still hard to believe that village life, however poor and difficult, is worse than slave labor.

You clearly know little about rural village life in China, especially for women. Working in a sweatshop factory as a bonded slave actually is preferable to village life, very often.

That's because the term 'village' has an ideallic quality to it. You don't picture the abject squalor that most villages actually have. And obviously I mean 3rd world villages...

I agree. But it does depend on specific regions though. However the situation may be difficult, there is no mass starvation at the moment which is why I find the quote incredulous.

not only are you off topic, you are wrong about many things. let's see if you can admit to your wrongs. China dont have enough censorship. a country with a lot of censorship is korea. but even they allow bbc to be broadcasted. i doubt any sovereign country in the world wants bbc to spread propaganda on their tuf. but the problem with this world is that if you try to kick out subversion, then these imperialist terrorists will cry human rights and democracy. let's take a look at some anti Chinese groups- bbc, cnn, fox, washington post, al jazira. all of these propaganda are not blocked. none of them are welcomed by the Chinese government. if China truly censored what they didnt like, then all of these sites would not exist. even google is not censored in China, despite google's attempt to destabilise China. almost every western publication along with their pupet states of singapore, hk, taiwan, south korea, japan, etc seem to be allowed to spread their propaganda about all types of subjects including their warped view on the libyan war, which directly conflicts with Chinese interests. China will not fall into democracy within 12 yrs. stop dreaming.
