Why ban goodbye threads?

Just because they piss off the moderators?

I don't have strong feelings on the matter but banning them just seems needlessly authoritarian.

If its in Cafe Mir, whats the problem?

1. Goodbye topics pointless and amount to a lot of "goodbye please don't leave"'s, perhaps paired with a no "I'm really leaving."

2. Simply telling people that you aren't going to be around soviet empire doesn't require a whole topic.

3. It adds to forum drama, which is always a headache for the administration and not becoming for a site dedicated to serious discussion.

4. If people aren't banned, they can always decide to come back later, so there's no call for "I'm leaving forever" statements.

Mostly this is just easier for us and it doesn't hurt the forum in any way.

Anyhow that's how I see it.

Agreed. The only reason to post a goodbye thread is to stir up divisiveness.
