Letter from Vietnam-USA society marks new beginning
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the end of the American War, the Vietnam-USA society has released an open letter to commemorate a new phase in Vietnamese-American relations.
Quote:
"On this occasion, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all peace-and-justice loving Americans for their opposition to the American war in Vietnam.
We also express our deepest sympathies to the American families who lost loved ones in the war. We highly appreciate the great efforts Americans, particularly veterans, have made in promoting relations of friendship and co-operation between the peoples of our two countries.
"Vietnam is no longer a land of war, but a country of growing prosperity. Our people's sacred desire is to live in peace, independence and freedom, to develop along the path of our own choice and to have friendly, co-operative relations with all countries. We welcome all Americans to come and see firsthand the changes in all aspects of life in Vietnam.
"The two countries experienced a difficult and complicated period in their interactions, but now enjoy a friendly relationship.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations ten years ago, we have seen multi-faceted bilateral co-operation take shape.
In the spirit of "shelving the past while not forgetting it, we're looking forward to the future."
We wish to contribute to building equal and mutually beneficial co-operation with the United States on a lasting and stable basis.
In pursuit of their humanitarian tradition, the Vietnamese people have been willingly working with Americans to address the war legacy, including the POW/MIA issue.
"On this occasion, we call on all Americans to join efforts in healing the wounds of the past and building friendly relations between Vietnam and the United States in the future and between the people of our two countries.
