I saw on CNN that Fidel Castro fell at a graduation ceremony. He broke his right arm and left knee, I believe. Since our government was so unkind as to insult Cuba rather than say a kind word, I wish to voice my hopes for his speedy recovery.

I sent a letter to him a few years back, and got a signed postcard in return. I'll check on that address later. However, I am not sure that in a 'post 9/11 world' they are allowing mail from the US to Cuba.

Ah well, perhaps it might work from Holland. Anyway, here's some more report on his fall:

Cuban President Fidel Castro put on a brave face in front of the cameras after he suffered a broken knee and a hairline fracture in his upper arm after a tumble Wednesday night.
Although it was not broadcast live on Cuban television, cameras caught Castro's misstep as he was leaving the stage at a graduation ceremony in the central city of Santa Clara.
Overlooking a small step down from the platform, the 78-year-old leader tripped and fell onto the ground, hitting his knee and hip, then his elbow and arm.
Within seconds, he was surrounded by a phalanx of security agents and anxious onlookers.
Having just wrapped up his speech for matriculating arts instructors, Castro was back on the air within moments of his stumble.
Sweating in his drab green uniform, Castro declared that he might have broken his knee "and maybe an arm ... but I am all in one piece."
Indeed, a medical examination afterward confirmed Castro had suffered a broken left knee and a hairline fracture in his upper right arm.
"I will do what is possible to recover as fast as possible, but as you can see I can still talk," he said. "Even if they put me in a cast, I can continue in my work."
Demonstrating he hadn't lost his focus, he noted the fact reporters from around the world had witnessed the fall.
"The international press has captured it and surely tomorrow it will be on the front pages of the newspapers."
Despite Castro's assurances, the fall has renewed questions that were top of mind when a fainting spell sent a stir through the island nation of 11.2 million three years ago.
That was when, addressing a crowd of thousands and an even larger TV audience, Castro fainted under the heat of the June sun. At the time, he was also quick to return to the microphone with assurances of his good health.
Following the incident Wednesday night, Castro made the three-hour drive back to Havana in his regular black Mercedes Benz.
The U.S State Department seemed unconcerned with Castro's health.
When asked whether he wished the Cuban leader a speedy recovery, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher replied simply, "No."
He said Castro's health is of little concern to the Bush administration, then urged a change in Cuba's leadership.
When you insult your enemy, you lower yourself to his level.

Those words don't describe the situation well. When he went down, people in the audience (not just public officials, which I wouldn't describe as security agents) literally threw aside chairs to jump to his aid.
Imagine if President Bush fell at a graduation ceremony and hurt himself. Two secret service agents would lift him to his feet among raucous laughter from a sizeable portion of the crowd. Wouldn't it be nice to have a leader that we could respect and care about?

Yeah, they'd throw pretzels at him!
Anyway, do you know how Cuba will elect it's next official after Fidel has passed on. I'm not saying this will happen any time soon, but the guy is almost 80, and he's had a very stressful life, and he still works hard, and he's only mortal. When Cuba has to chose another leader, how will they do it, and do you think they'll still be Communist?
That white hose guy was so evil. Fidel is so much better than any of them. Cut the Guy some slack! Fidel should try to assasinate bush for a change. With a pretzel. Fidel, in the Oval office, with the pretzel. I should stop taliking about pretzels. But i cant stop saying pretzel. Pretzel.
