Glorious Leader: what'cha confused about?

I was confused by your wording, but I think I understand now. I don't think one can dismiss Eisenstein as a 'over-rated cop-out' that easily.

The RussianLord: ага. Ну и конечно: "КАК ТЫ ЗДЕСЬ ОКАЗАЛСЯ? - Стреляли"....
(sorry to English speakers, we are just quoting quotes from the movies).

Glorious Leader: Yeah, I am not that fond of silent movies overall. I do think Eistensten is allright, I went to see the MN orchestra play a Shastokovich medley to Battleship Potemkin, that was cool. I just don't really like when people say "Russian movies? Oh Eistensten!" and that's it. They are missing out.

So it's not possible to find subtitled soviet films on websites?

I mean come on, even South Park can be watched for free everywhere...

p.s. if anyone knows where I can watch soviet films online for free (and legally) please share the link.

This guy has a nice collection, although it's all broken up by youtube. But there are subtitles! If you know specifically what film you're looking for, you can find more elsewhere on youtube now too generally.

Personally I think the 1970s and up to mid-1980s was the best period, and I find the early silent work pretty boring, no matter how ground-breaking and innovative it may have been. For me 70s and 80s Soviet cultural production is special because I have this strange sense of nostalgia, plus it shows the country in probably its best, most relaxed and happy state, no matter what problems existed.

I watched "Moscow doesn't believe in tears" some days ago. It shows perfectly well the Soviet society during the 60's and 70's and has some critics towards it. Very interesting: I strongly recommend it. You can find the movie on www.veoh.com
