Was the Communist Party/Communist Marxist Socialist Political Parties ever illegal in the United States during the Cold War or has it always been legal to believe in Communism ?

If I'm not mistaken, the CPUSA was temorarily banned in 1919 due to the first Red Scare. Other than that, I think they were legal for the most part (excluding guerilla groups that sprung up in the 1960s), but heavily monitored by the government.

It has been mostly legal.. just repressed as hell.
