Chavez - his safe return

It seems strange to me that Chavez would be returned after the coup failed. Why is this? Why was he not killed? Were they afraid that without Chavez, the country would become even more radical?

Chavez has strong support in the army. The US and the local big burgueois council (Fedecamaras) thought the the army (or some important sector of it) would support the coup which was not the case, along with an important number of workers and middleclass people. Of course, the calculation was terribly off and Chavez was restored by the army and a mass movilization from the poor and working people. In the subsequent election, Chavez won without problems.
