What is your opinion of Algeria's experiment with socialism? Under Ahmed Ben Bella, President from 1963 to 1965, the civilian government pursued a form of socialism that was somewhat agrarian in focus. He promoted a theory of autogestion, in which the workers themselves would run the economy. He did not, to my knowledge, want a highly centralised state to direct all economic development in a top-down way. However, according to my information, this is what happened after a coup by military officer Houari Boumédiènne. Boumédiènne switched the emphasis from agrarian to industrial and scrapped the idea of autogestion. Economic development was firmly in the hands of the central government. Also, whilst the National Liberation Front remained the only legal party, it became marginalised under his rule. As a military man, Boumédiènne preferred to rule through the military. He died in 1978. Today, Algeria is no longer socialist.

I must admit that I know very little other than this, and I would very much like to hear from anyone who has a more extensive knowledge of socialism in Algeria. If there is already a topic on this, please bring it to my attention.

I believe Che visited Algeria, and there is a photo of Fidel with Boumedienne in the context of the Non-Aligned Movement, if that answers your question.

Algeria was a major customer of Soviet weapons. That's all I know, sorry.

He did. It may also have been during the struggle of the FLN (Im sure it was, it was at least a 10 year fight off the top of my head).

I believe they did attempt a form of socialism duirng the time period you mentioned... and I also read somewhere they called it "Islamic Socialism" or something.
