I still don't understand...
Do you mean when it became socialist? How it became socialist? Are you asking if it even is socialist?

Laos really isn't socialist these days; it's a neocolonial dependent on Thailand, the US, and China.

Laos became socialist in 1975 with the overthrow of the royalist gov't, and it maintained strong ties to Vietnam and the USSR for the first ten years or so, but since the mid 1980s, Laos has gradually whored itself to corporatism (like China since 1978) and the IMF.

However, I believe the Laos People's Revolutionary Party is still the ruling party.

Well said Marshal Konev.

Proletarian internationalism, class war, communist revolution, yada yada. The Pathet Lao seized power in 1975 with much help thanks to Vietnam.

Vietnam has tended to dominate Laos. Also Vietnam is a much bigger power than Cambodia.

Laos, like Vietnam, is in a situation where it is necessary to us an NEP thing.

What is the problem, he is asking a clear question, is or was Laos socialist? Not a difficult question...

As comrade Konev pointed out, Laos started whoring itself out in the 80s to corporatism. That's when DEA started showing up in Laos, too. So that's a clear indication of a complete sellout.

Laos is a Socialist country, it experienced Revolution in 1975, but the Lao People's Party had been waging war for about a decade. The Party changed its name to the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and launched the New Economic Mechanism, aimed to raise the production of the peasantry, while encouraging industrialization, until the country was ready for the economic stage of Socialism. Currently, it is led by Comrade Choummaly Sayasone.
