It really doesn't matter how much they ask for. There is no way, short of nuclear holocaust, that the US (or any nation on Earth) could have caused enough damage in an area the size of Maryland (quite a small US state, Google Earth it) to equal $75 trillion.

Just say the number out loud. SEVENTY FIVE TRILLION. The combined wealth of the world was $43.6 trillion in 2000.

The only war that could have caused anywhere near that amount of damage would have been WWII. And while the Korean War was a tragedy for both North and South, let's face facts-- it wasn't WWII. Kim's accounting practices are as suspect as his grasp of history, democracy, and human rights.

it isnt the combined wealth it is the products of the year. which is still alot, i agree that it couldn't be 75 trillions.

OK,exactly HOW MUCH damage was caused, according to the Soviets.
And it doesn't really matter,if Soviet Union asked for partial reparations, why would DPRK ask for full reparations?(Germany at that time was in ruins, but it still was an industrial power, with great potentials in 5-10 years of rebuilding)

to be a dick and as a propaganda gesture.

Kim will just probably announce that the US really DID pay the sum(or even more),and everyone's happy.
If USA starts compensating every country it (directly) harmed,it would get bankrupt in no time.

Mind you. USA is ALREADY technically bankrupts, just that China bails them out, and doesn't want USA to go bankrupt, but purely on a financial technical basis, USA has already gone bankrupt.

Perhaps you didn't know, but the accumulated amount of bombs used in the Korean war amounts to more then the total amount of bombs which were used in all of WW II.
And the Korean war was far more tragic to the North then to the South, cause the bombings occured mainly on the north part of the country.

if im not mistaken the KPA crossed the 38th first, certainly not the Americans.

The US army had at that time left the peninsula, but that doesn't mean the SK army was peacefull, in fact there had been continuous border incidents in which the south army crossed the 38 parallel. A political solution for the unification of the two parts of Korea was not in sight, so it was clear that a military campaign was about to start any time.

Please note also that the KPA was inhaled in the south as liberators, not as occupiers.
But then, I think the miscalculation was that the US army and UN forces would retaliate and enter the Korean peninsula, not only to draw the KPA back, but in fact to conquer the whole of Korea. Just that the Chinese PLA helped the DPRK to force the UN troops back behind the 38 parallel, until finally an armistice was reached.

A further miscalculation was that the Soviet Union did not prevent a UN resolution, because at the time they boycotted the UN because the PRC had no seat in the UN while Taiwan did.

On a related note to reparations (didn't think it was worth its own thread, but a mod can split it if they choose):

North Korea demands reparations from Japan

The government of North Korea is demanding reparations and an apology from Japanese leaders for the colonial occupation of Korea in the early 1900s. The Japanese government recently issued an apology to South Korea for the colonizing of the Korean Peninsula, but made no such effort to reconcile with the government of the Democratic People’s Republic.

"Japan should make a sincere apology and make full reparation to the Korean nation for its aggression and crimes against humanity," said a representative of the North Korean Central News Agency. (CNN, Aug. 22)

Japan occupied Korea from 1910 until 1945, during which time around 200,000 Korean and Chinese women were turned into sexual slaves for members of the Japanese army. The prime minister of Japan expressed his “deep regret” for the suffering inflicted during that time period.

An apology is not enough for the crimes against the Korean people. If the Japanese government was sincere in its apology, it would issue reparations for crimes in the past and those still being comitted today.
