The new Russian Global Navigation System is coming online, with GLONASS GPS devices already being sold to the general public at 18 000 rubles a piece, and the military datalinking their computer networks to use the GLONASS for directing troops. It looks like the American monopoly on satellite support has been broken.

It's a very good development. GLONASS has been in the making since the seventies but the USSR was never able to finish it, nor did Russia in the early years after the collapse of the USSR. The sattelites that already had been placed in orbit by the USSR had to be replaced because they exceeded their lifespan even though they were never really used. But Putin has invested a lot of money into this project and the last satellites are being put into orbit as we speak.

The last satellites are meant to go into orbit in 2010 iirc. They will be new GLONASS-K satellites. The other amazing thing is that you will be able to buy GLONASS receivers in Russia for your car (just like GPS systems in the states).

This is interesting. I have been dissapointed by my gps reciever for some time. What is the denefits/drawbacks of the russian system? Does it have coverage outside russia?
What about the ESA project? Gallileo or what is it called?

The GLONAS system was very near completion by the end of the USSR. They had devices too.

Sad it just rotted in the 90's huh?

Well the system got delayed by the financial crisis, but as of right now it covers all of Russia and most of the rest of the world. The full 24 operational sattelites should be by the end of this year, start of the next one.
