What do you people think of the new Russian space shuttle Kliper, set to have it's first launch 2011-2013? I think it's a great project and it if it all goes according to plan it will surely restore Russia's space program to her former glory. It will actually make it's first flight just about when the US Space Shuttle is making her last flights, so the Russians will have a great advantage until the Americans come with something new.

Yes they have the money if they really need to, and they do, if they want to continue playing a major role in space exploration. If there is something Russia can be really proud of, it's their space program, they are the people which first got a human into space, that's a huge achievement. They are also getting help from ESA, the European Space Agency with research and extra funding, furthermore Russia is also developing a new rocket, the Angara.

If there is something Russia can be proud of that would be: Putins dictatorship and poverty.

Really, its pathetic that modern day putinist russia cares more about space programs than its people, there is no proud in that.

The Russian people should work on 'restoring' socialism, until then, useless space programs dont help the people eat dinner.

I have do not understand why people here think that people in Russia are freezing and starving. I suspect the portrayal of Russia in the west may induce this image, but it is certainly not true. There is enough food for all, and all cities and villages have heating. And education is very good, although it has gone down. Education is much better than in west.
Though it is true to say that Russia is not in its best shape at all, one must not assume the extreme. Yes, there are very many awful problems in Russia, but this must not stop Russia from space exploration. Resources used for a good space program will not hurt Russia at all, only go to the benefit.
So yes, problems need to be urgently addressed. But no, a space program would not get in the way of this.

I agree with Comrade Svarog. Redirecting money from the space program... to where? At least the space industry is one of the few industries which still survive in Russia, aside from crude oil export...
Besides, the US can't reliably deliver cargo to space with the shuttle, so we have a small lead today. Actually, space programs help people eat dinner, because in my city, many thousand people work on space rocket facilities. If the space programs cease to exist, there'd just be more unemployment and "brain leak", when these specialists, left with no job, would try to emigrate.
