I just realized there is little here on Siad Barre, socialist leader of Somalia from '69 to '91. What are your opinions of him and of Somalia under his leadership?
I personally don't see Somalia as having been socialist. There was a sense of progressive leadership, but no so much a proletarian emphasis; a basis of the proletariat, so to speak. There is a sense of irony in his foreign relations, having to cancel relations with one imperialistic country in substitution for another. Again, Somalia wasn't socialist, this being one reason in a sense. I can't really find a whole lot of information about him either.

I think Somalia today is partially a result of his rule. I don't appreciate him much because of his inability to eliminate clanism in Somalia which eventually led to his loss of power
