Has anyone heard of this guy? The more "popular" killer from the USSR seems to be Andrei Chikatilo.
There was a much lesser known serial killer that operated with in The Soviet Union, specifically in Uzbek SSR, called Nikola Dzhumagaliev. Unlike Chikatilo, who was un-attractive, impotent, and all around socially awkward, Dzhumagaliev was said to be very attractive, and smooth, and had no problems having sex with several women (by conscent), but he did however kill several women. He was also called "Metal Fang" or "Iron Fang" for his white metal teeth. He also called himself a "Descendent of Ghenghis Kahn" Not much is known about this guy, and some sources are saying that he is free while others are saying he is still jailed in a mental hospital in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. It's interesting because Chikatilo the "Rostove Ripper" or "Red Ripper" seems to be widely known in the West, as well as the East, because of what he was, a serial killer from the USSR, which was something the Soviets weren't ready for. Anyways, wikipedia and various other english speaking websites all share the same information. I decided to look him up on Russian wikipedia and just through a simple search I was given much more information on this guy. This is what I was able to get out of the Russian site, first of all, I learned his middle name was "Espolovich" which isn't even mentioned on ANY english speaking website, so that's a great start already. So I guess his father was Central Asian while his mother was Eastern European, Russian. He was raised in Islamic culture. When he was in his late teens I guess he contracted syphillis from some White Russian woman, and from then on has had a hostility towards the European women in the USSR for being "loose"(Please note these are statement from interviews with him, don't shoot the messenger). He was in the military then went to become a mechanic. Then it says he also was a firefighter later on, at this point he had killed at least 5 women. When he was a firefighter he had got drunk with a colleague and I guess shot him (on accident) and was charged with man slaughter, but deemed "unfit." Something of the kind...strange. It was pretty difficult for me to decipher all this but I'll just give it all in a nutshell. it looks like he killed a woman waiting for a factory bus and then he remembers hiding when the bus came along, with the body, and then he had sex with a factory worker at his friends house or something, and then killed her and drank her blood. Very strange stuff. Oh yeah he also cannibalized women and ate them, made them into ethnic dishes and served them to his friends as well. On the english wiki-pedia it states that his friends were invited over and saw a head in his refrigerator and promptly informed the police. The Russian wiki pedia goes into more detail, and says that his friends found him in a room covered in blood, and left to get the police, by that time he had high tailed it to a family members house. He was caught sometime in the late 80's, and escaped twice. Each time he escaped he went and lived in the mountains and thrived in various villages apparently. He was released sometime in 1995 and went to live in his old village, where everyone knew him as "Iron Fang" and people would throw things at him and spit at him. The article ends with some very confusing words, that say he was released in as recently as 2010!! but then dead bodies were found immediately with in the viccinities of where he was living which landed him right back in the hopsital. Or that's what I think this is saying: "In 2010, 19 years after his capture, act Dzhumagalieva have been developed. To some extent it recognized cured and set free, and immediately found in the vicinity of dismembered bodies." But now he's apparently in the hospital again, and spends his time working with the hospital "assisting staff" as well as working on clocks and such. I have no idea the year of this picture. But he has some of the blackest eyes I've seen. Партия всегда права.

Great story! I supposed he may have been released in the 1990's during the transfer to Uzbek sovereignty. I wonder why he hasn't simply been executed if more bodies have been found. I guess the burden of proof is harder to fix, or evidence is lacking.

Yeah this guy does make somewhat of a compelling story doesn't he? I'd like to see a movie on him. Chikatilo got one.
Quote: I honsestly have no idea. Seems really bizarre. I don't find it too reliable but every other source in english says NOTHING about him, except for his location, and that he was a cannibalistic serial killer. So far, the Russian wiki pedia is the only source that says he was released in 2010 and immediately bodies were found in his vicinity. It doesn't make it clear nor give much more information on that little tidbit, so it all seems a bit iffy to me. And its very hard to read the badly translated english....can't wait until I become proficient in Russian. Last edited by Man In Grey on 27 Oct 2011, 19:03, edited 1 time in total.

I'd be interested to see a Marxist analysis of the phenomenon of the serial killer.
Is such a thing possible under real Communism?

I don't see why a character like this could not exist in real communism, however rare it might be. While real communism might reduce cases like these to a minimum, it doesn't mean that a member of society can "lose it" even if he belongs to a society where his economic needs are satisfied and society is cohesive.

Of course under any sort of system, even full fledged, true communism, there's always going to be certain "bad apples". Under Communism the people need to deal with it collectively punish people like this guy.
Although it would be really interesting to see such an analysis from a Marxist, I don't even think Marx himself ever wrote on the subject...did he? Партия всегда права.

There are, of course, Marxist paradigms in both criminology and psychology, but I don't believe the phenomenon of serial killers has been looked at from a Marxist perspective. But, now I'm really interested, so I'll have to go look.

The closest I have seen by Marx himself is Peuchet on suicide.
But really, there's just so much material to draw from, criminology, psychology and even some more "sociological" perspectives regarding anomie, ideology and the problem of deviancy. Ultimately, though, I think that any such perspective will aways be supra-individual, or rather, intra or pre-individual, while serial killers have many traits that could be wholly individual (neurological, phychological), and which might mean that they are to be found, in larger or smaller numbers, in all communities. I would like to think though that the socialist overcoming of the paradigm of individuals-as-monads and the end of strangement would prevent the isolation and falling-off-the-tracks of most people who end up becoming serial killers. ![]() "It does not suffice to reject the error; we must overcome it, explain it and outgrow it." - Antonio Labriola Forum Rules praxicoide wrote: It appears that you are right, prax. Everything I've found on the subject takes this perspective. Unfortunately, Marxist social science theories deal exclusively with people under capitalism as a method of critique, so there is nothing that could describe a Soviet serial killer in these terms. I've found nothing from Soviet works either. ![]() Forum Rules Red_Son: Bob Avakian is the Glenn Beck of communism. "Le prolétariat; c'est moi." - King Indigo XIV

I think all of your analysis are too Marxist. It is not always the economic conditions around a person which can make them nuts. You never know what these people encounter in their day to day lives. Furthermore, he may have had some troubles in his mind.

Political Interest wrote: A (truly) Marxist analysis shouldn't reduce everything to an economic relation. There are other things to consider, such as social factors, and yes, as you said, prior mental health. However, I do believe the anti-social nature of capitalism somewhat contributes to this problem. ![]() Forum Rules Red_Son: Bob Avakian is the Glenn Beck of communism.
