To start this thread with a quote from Engels:
Friedrich Engels wrote: What do you think of universal suffrage? Should it be implemented in socialism, or not? Is Engels right when he says that "universal suffrage is the gauge of the maturity of the working class? In other words, how do we make sure there is "democracy"? Terror without virtue is fatal; virtue without terror is impotent.
I support universal suffrage I guess in the same way I support the eight-hour workday. Out of practicality but not because it is satisfying.

I've been meaning to make a poll on this topic for ages, but never got round to it because I was a little unsure about what options to list.
Personally I feel that democracy is pretty pointless in most societies where the population are just incredibly ignorant and self-motivated. Maybe under Communism there might be a place for it, but during the transitional period I'd say decisions need to be left to a party elite. I realize it's heresy, but I'm rather ambivalent about a "class-based" dictatorship - I suppose it depends exactly how it's implemented. If it's just a catch-phrase to defend a party dictatorship, then that seems reasonable, but if it's meant be something more than this then I'm not so sure.

How can socialism be workers' control if they have no political power? I think it's hard to say: universal suffrage in bourgeois democracies are a farce at best and is really only used to legitimise the power of the bourgeoisie, but I feel under socialism, people should have political power in both the means of production and in the political process. Universal suffrage might not be the best way to do this, but if there is truly to be a dictatorship of the proletariat, it should be firmly controlled by the proletariat itself. I realise that the party elite might be proletariat, but a party elite might cause other contradictions (such as the one between the bureaucracy and the people) to explode and cause counterrevolution, like it did in former socialist countries. We don't need government, we need administration.
Workers elect specialists to carry out proposed tasks, and recall them instantly if they are screwing around. The specialists perform the administrative tasks, but they have no significant ability to make decisions independent of the workers decision making process Soviet America is Free America!
Under communism, there is no freedom; you are not free to live in poverty, be homeless, to be without an education, to starve, or to be without a job |
