I've joined today after having this site bookmarked for a couple of years! I'm a photography lecturer who was lucky enough at the age of 12 to go and visit Leningrad.

Its a sad thing that I hadn't taken up photography by the time I did the Baltic cruise of Visby-Helsinki-Leningrad-Kobenhavn
I do have long series of pictures on that wonderful part of the Soviet Union that still exists today, Pridnestrovie or Transdniester Republic or even Transnistria I'll fish them out at some point soon when I've figured out my personal settings. Interesting pics. Transnistria seems sort of stuck in the Soviet era, or frozen in transition, much like Belarus. I don't really know as much as I ought to about the region, except that the people seem to be ethnically related to Ukraine? Moldava, on the other hands, seems far more suited to be a part of Romania.

Those pictures on your web site seemed pretty good (not being an expert on photography that is). I can't really say that I know anything much about Transnistria, other than some article I watched about Igor Smirnov (President) on a current affairs program. It certainly looks very familiar though. I could be mistaken, but I was under the impression that it has a mainly private economy these days. When did you go on that Baltic cruise? During the Soviet Era or after? Do you have plans to go back to Russia at any stage to get some pictures? 27 May 2010, 10:18
Dear Che, bear with me as I try to get my head around the colour palette I dont seem to have managed the colour change properly..
I was sitting around one day when I noticed a large propaganda banner appear on the TV, Simon Reeve was explaining that there was a country in the heart of Europe that was like an open air Stalinist theme park I was on the web soon after arranging a visit. I had previously intended to photograph A to Z for my MA major project - Archangelsk & Zanzibar, (a bit of a tenuous idea really..) Transnistria remains a key strategic point in Europe. Romania is EU, Moldova is Romanian (one referendum away in all honesty). Transnistria of all the unrecognised states- Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabak & South Ossetia - sits right on the Ukraine's southern border. There is a huge and not too derelict airforce base in Tiraspol...
