You're going to make me narrow it down to ONE???
I love ALL love the AK variants... I'm also a fan of the Bayonet and side arm (Makerov) that goes with it. On the other hand, I am also a fan of the MiG (ALL of them)! If I really have to choose ONE, I guess I would go with the AK-47. I really like the Bulgarian variant the best, but I happen to own a WASR-10. It's a pretty awesome rifle, even though it's the low end of the quality spectrum in AK's. I wouldn't part with mine for ANYTHING though. (Except maybe for a Bulgarian one.) ![]() Ya_Amerikanyets wrote: Congratulations on owning a genuine AK 47. I served the Yugoslav National Army carrying this weapon http://bit.ly/t7WiSQ, Ak47 M70 AB2. I find it more versatile than the WASR-10 due to it's underfolding stock (Serbo-Croatian = rasklopiv kundak). Such stock is lethal in close combat (almost no need for a bayonett).
The weird thing about the Yugoslav People's Army is that it started introducing the SKS rifle (locally knows as PAP) only in 1959. when the Warsaw Pact countries had already equipped its armies with AKs...previously the M48(a variant of the German kar.98k) was used.
Zastava M70 was introduced only in 1970 although i heard that it was one of the best AK variants. EdvardK wrote: I am extremely proud of that rifle. I had the choice between it and an AR-15, but it was my dream since I was about 8 years old to own an AK. I didn't need to think twice! After purchasing it, I took it to an expert and was told that it was a 1950's model that was modified and imported. Based on the make-up and parts on the rifle I was told that it had probably seen combat, and may have been some place in Africa, such as Angola. It has a reddish wood stock on it, and I affectionately call it 'my little redhead.' EdvardK wrote: Ok, questions: how does it affect the firing of the rifle when the stock is folded? I assume you would want a folded stock for sweeping a room, or in tight quarters. Are there other situations when the folded stock is an advantage? I understand your comment about the lethality of the unfolded stock. The AK bayonet is nice just as a blade in itself, but it is also a wire cutter. Can't do that with a folding stock. Loz wrote: The SKS is also a great weapon. I've handled one before... Drawbacks are - it's mostly made of wood (at least the one my friend had was), and the bayonet was crap compared to the AK bayonet. ![]() Ya_Amerikanyets wrote: One can shoot from the hip and having the rifle placed in front of oneself (which one cannot do with an unfolded stock). And, yes, you're correct, combat in tight quarters enables manouverability. Another good point - which has got nothing to do with the firing itself - is that carrying a rifle with a folded stock is easier because it's half the length of the unfolded stock rifle. Ya_Amerikanyets wrote: Correct Having a bayonnet is much better than unfolded stock only, but if one hasn't got the time to put it on then one has to improvise and we were drilled to fight without one in close combat situations. Of course, having a bullet in the chamber is always the most effective way to win such combat
Mosin Nagant, AK-47, and the stunningly beautiful ladies. I fell for one. That is why I am here. Natasha, here I come...going up to the 8th floor to visit her again for the nth time and have dinner and vodka...We were suppose to go out Valentine's Day. I fell asleep. She was waiting. It's interesting in being one of few semi-automatic sniper rifles. Definately intended as more of a battlefield weapon than a super precision instrument, but that is also more fitting with the soviet concepts of very high-tempo warfare. As with many of our comrades, the Avtomat Kalashnikova, but my other favorites are the Samozaryadnyj Karabin sistemy Simonova, 1945 (which has a decent kick, but is a pleasure to wield, especially with a detachable magazine) and the Pulemyot Kalashnikova for it's significance, and the Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova, for its power and usefulness at both long range with a scope or a bigass SKS with the scope detached and iron sights. But if the 7.62x39 or 7.62x54mm ammo runs out, you could always just use good old fashioned or the RPG-7

I always thought that the SVD (Dragunov) was a cool looking weapon, but I've got no real idea about this sort of thing outside of computer games. ![]() That thing's 7.62x54 round has some serious firepower and recoil- But it's not as good as the US's M107 because the M107 has a systen that dampens recoil and is chambered for .50 BMG. if u used that chambering for an SVD, you'd need a seatbelt to prevent flying off the Caucasus into the Medditerranean.l

It is a hard questions, because there are so many effective weapons, and until now Russia inherits of all Soviet Union's know how.
My favourites could be : - AK-47 7.62 mm - DSHK 12.7 mm - T-72 - Mig-17 - Mig-21 - AT-3 Sagger -still effective, until now it could destroy any tank in the world, including M1 Abrams- - M-1939 - AZP S-60 57 mm there are so many...no use to talk about Mig-25, Mig-29, Mig-31, Lavochkin La-5, Yak-7, Yak-141, SU-17, SU-24, SU-27 family etc... |
