1987 – South African Airways flight 295 crashes into the Indian Ocean, killing all 159 people on-board. Conspiracy theorists believe the inflight fire that doomed the Boeing 747 may have been caused by weapons smuggling. SAA aircraft were notorious for smuggling weapons to South Africa during the Apartheid years.

1989 – Cold War: Velvet Revolution – In the face of protests, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia announces it will give up its monopoly on political power.

Oh, man, I totally did not think about (or even realise) that. One more reason why it would have been rather hilarious (in a twisted way) had the recent DPRK-South Korean tensions led to a war, and then the Chinese intervene again (which they probably would).

1830 - Beginning of Polish uprising against Russian Rule in the failed November Uprising.

Also, Spets' post should say November 29.

The DPRK can still attack.

True. I just thought it would be funny if the war started on the same day that DPRK & Chinese forces drove the US-led UN forces out of the country 60 years ago and led to a Chinese intervention again.

1986 - I was born in the greatest country on earth to a loving father and mother, and recieved the most honored title in the world, United States Citizen.

1989 - For my third birthday, the German Democratic Republic's parliament gave me a wonderful present, they abolished the constitutional provision granting the communist party the leading role in the state. Seeing democracy prevail on your birthday is always fun.
1991 – For my fifth birthday, the Ukrainian people gave me another wonderful gift. On this day Ukrainian voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum for independence from the Soviet Union. Having the Soviet Union collapse on your birthday is always fun.
2010 - For my 24th birthday, I go to work, then I get my ass kicked in Krav Maga class, and then I finish off the night drinking with friends.

Its been a good 24 years, here is to the next 60. Cheers.

Aaah the infamous Kirov Assassination. The event which set the ball rolling for the Purges. What do people think of the claim made by Khrushchev and numerous others that Uncle Joe was behind it? It certainly looks pretty suspicious to me.

A former history student at my university, now a graduate student, is actually doing some research into that.
Things like this always lead to too many conspiracy theories. Leonid Nikolaev, the assassin, had been once held in custody by the NKVD after being caught with a firearm in his briefcase, supposedly, but he was released and allowed to keep his gun. Certain things, like the fact that Nikolaev was allowed to go despite being caught with a loaded revolver, the loosening of security, and the seemingly accidental death of someone on the security detail on that night shortly after, certainly do lead credibility to ideas of a planned operation, or at least, that the NKVD knew about the guy wanting to kill Kirov when they first caught him but did nothing to stop it. I've also heard things like how the guy who did it was jealous of Kirov, and he might have suspected an affair between the assassin's wife and Kirov. Then after he carried out the killing, the state saw the opportunity to crack down on potential opposition, or maybe the Party, or just Stalin himself, was genuinely shaken. It could have been more like the Reichstag Fire—not planned by the authorities, but which the authorities seized as an opportunity. Who knows?

Yes,a beautiful gift indeed.
All that Ukraine got from the collapse of Soviet Union was corruption, crime,AIDS,despair, prostitution, alcoholism, several million unnatural deaths and a demographic catastrophe.

Comrade Komissar, do you have a link or complete profile about Zaporozhets (chief of Leningrad NKVD) whom released Leonid Nikolaev after caught by the NKVD at the first time? It seems he was the 'idle hand' behind Kirov's assassination, I'm only found very few information about him, thanks for your help

Umm are you sure you got that right? The Revolution ended in 1959. Castro had already established himself as leader of Cuba by 1961, in fact that was the year of the Bay of Pigs.
