I have often thought about what might occur if alien life forms made contact with humanity, and have conceived of aliens being advanced enough that they might have adopted communism. On the other hand, what is there to prevent advanced extraterrestrials from having a militaristic, exploitative ideal?
Looking at humanity as an example, space exploration is basically stalled after the Cold War space race, with the idealistic Soviet Union collapsing and the finance/materialism-based US making the argument that at the present time technology levels are too low for material gain to be made from space exploration. This does not mean that this will always be the case. Technology levels and resource needs can force human imperialists into space, and the same can thus be theorized for extraterrestrials.

That would bring up a whole host of questions about how another species evolved, and how their societal structures were.
When all the frames of reference are different, they may never have reached our concepts of ownership and exploitation. If we're talking about a species advanced enough for large scale interstellar travel, they would almost have to be collectivist to some extent, to make it achievable.
