boxing_kangaroo:
1.Without strong military North Korea will be conquered, and all will die.
2.Nuclear power program is critical for providing Korea with energy.
So, they simply have no other choice.
But they managed to overcome problems of yankee treachery (i.e. refusal to honor trade agreement), and doubled production of food.

i just dont see how they can possibly be doubling production of food, whilst still maintaining a good military, there are only about 15,000,000 people there that are suitable for every-day work.
they need to focus on trying to gain some alliances, perhaps china would be a good start, but of course they would not let these powers interfer in their internal affairs.
Once they have a couple of allies, they can reduce their military manpower to about 600,000 with about 2,000,000 reserves and start focusing on feeding their population, raising living standards and trying to outdo the living standards of South Korea.
They seem to be a strong nation that is determined to uphold Communism, but they do need to improve in some areas.

The doubled production by doubling efficiency.
They already has higher average living standarts than average living standarts of South Korea, so why bother?
They have free food in huge amounts (can you eat one kilogram of rice per day?), free equipment (each young family receives color TV, fridge and stuff like this for free), free furniture, free 150-square-meters flat.
And 600,000 men army - it is suicide.
North Korean Spetsnaz is around 100,000. Plus Air Force, plus Navy. You are going to kick them out?
You talk like you are some kapitalist spy!!!

i was also amazed to see how happy the people are in pyongyang on those videos but even the embargo the yankees have put on north korea and the frowning north korea gets from quite a number of world powers, would mean that they would struggle a lot to keep up.
i know most of it is not self-inflicted, but i just feel that if they made some friends it could do them a lot of good.
and on that train disaster, we saw their hospitals there and they were struggling to even get enough beds or medicine.
pyongyang must be almost the only decent city there.
