I'm planning to go to the Czech Republic sometime this year, so I'd like to know if anybody here is knowledgeable about socialist Czechoslovakia. What was life like, etc?

Second to DDR in standard of living compared to the rest of the "eastern block".It was an industrialized country even before WW2...
Cuisine is similar to Germany's,that's great to me.Go to Prague and enjoy cheap and good beer.
I'm going with my school on a 7 day excursion this year.

If you're in Prague, go to the museum of Communism, google it. It's ironically right next to a Macdonalds and a casino. they have lots of posters, pictures, objects, recreated scenes from the period and it tells the story of the socialist period really well.

Somehow I doubt he's going to Prague primarily as a result of communist interest and is probably going there for the pilsner and girls.
You should check out the Museum of Communism in Prague, as strasser has pointed out. It presents communist life in Czechoslovakia, mainly Prague in areas such as politics, history and culture of the ČSSR.

I agree, though its a lot more expensive now than 5 years ago, head to Bratislava or anywhere outside the capitals for a really cheap trip

Avoid what you can get on the street.
Pure shit,or mostly not even drug at all.
Better stick to the cheap and excellent beers...

If I see people smoking a joint (which seems to happen often in Prague, since it's fragging LEGAL), it's safe to assume that what they might sell me will be good. If I see people taking pills in a club (which seems to happen often in Prague, since it's fragging LEGAL), I have reason to believe that what they might sell me will be good - etc...

Just beware of gypsies dragging your sleeve on the main streets.
It's flour you'll get(if you're lucky)...

If it's legal, they probably sell it in stores

No
It's not exactly legalized(like in Netherlands) but it is decriminalized.
Having 1-2 grams is not a felony in Czech republic.
At least that's what i've been told from people who've been there last year...

Perhaps that's not that ironically, if my information is correct the museum doesn't show the best picture of communism after all. They have three departments: "The Dream","The Reality" and "The Nightmare" but they refer almost always to the "nightmare".
