One of the most respected (probably the only one) Communist leader of PRC. Could anyone explain to me why he was very respected?

Zhou Enlai, besides having been with the Communist party since nearly the beginning, he worked toward economic reforms, and to counter the Sino-Soviet split he arranged for Nixon’s visit to China. He was a moderate compared to the "Gang of Four" (who were the ones continuing to promote the cultural revolution) and even reinstated Deng Xiaoping.

I have recently taken a course on Chinese civilization, and got some of this info from a textbook which seems to be some what anti-communist in tone.
