An interesting video I found that's a collection of DDR's commercials from the 60s, I think this is the adequate place to post it since it gives us some insight into their everyday lifes.

Doesn't revolve around consumers or have a "consumer culture". The People's Communes had general stores that would sell only consumer goods. Anyway, the GDR had to compete image-wise with the FRG; it was the crown-jewel of the Eastern Bloc - and what a jewel and crown they were!
