You might want to Try Aria then, Rock band formed in 1985, in Russia.

Try DDT. They're regular rock from the mid to late 80s. 'Daleko Daleko' and 'Born in the USSR' are both my favorite songs by them. Also, there's the Russian Red Army Choir and all the Soviet and Russian folk songs and anthems they do. Their rendition of the USSR Anthem is simply divine and their live performances of 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' and the ever so famous Russian folk song 'Kalinka' with the Leningrad Cowboys both are the greatest Russian performances I've heard. That's pretty much all of the Soviet music I know of. There's Russian (post-Soviet) stuff too like the pop group Tatu and rappers like Decl. Those are always good to look up.

In general (nothing to do with rock), nothing beats army, NKVD, party or Komsomol songs, anthems, etc. My favorites are the Russian Partisans, Marsh Dzerzhintsev, The International (the English, Spanish and Portuguese versions are very nice), the USSR anthem, the Armenian and Azerbaidjan SSR anthems, and the French Partisans. This last one is very touching, every time I hear it, tears come to my eyes.

Why did the Supreme Soviet make it illegal? For what they said and for their obvious pro-western stances? If most of it was like the Polish rock bands supported by Solidarnost, than I understand it well: those poor guys had congenital myxedema (acute clinical cretinism) .
I do not know the last two, but I know t.A.T.u. Their music is okay, but that is all about this duo. They are not artists, the real artists in this band are the music and lyrics composers (excluding some idiocy and deranged ideas like "human-robot love relations" in the lyrics) and especially the sound engineers who play with the two singers' voices to make it sound much more acceptable than it is in reality. Other than that, I fully agree: it is utter crap.
I am sorry to say it, and I regret if I offend someone, but since the perestroica, Russian women are all generalized and considered as whores, now it is even worse, they are all considered as lesbian whores, thanks to t.A.T.u.
Really, this band only show the baseness, wickedness and depravity of the bourgeois class and the current bourgeois society we are living in. By the way, tickets for their concerts reach hundreds of dollars for the VIP places which is very high for most countries where they went on tour, so the class character of the whole thing is obvious. And also what is even better about the concerts is that they sing in playback... else, it would probably make a horror show sound .
Today, there is no more art. Everything is nicely marketed excrement, i.e. excrement in a nice box with a filthy cover of people whoring like all the 50 cents or Madonnas or Mylène Farmers or Britney Spears, and all the other deranged people horde.

I recently watched a video about them. The original idea of the band was to show that friendship is love and nothing is better than pure love, blablabla. What we can see in reality is nothing like that, they are portraying homosexuality (and heterosexuality as well) not as a true love but as an exclusively filthy creepy villainous sexual act. They are so mentally deranged that in their concerts, they simulate masturbation, they ask for fans both homosexual and heterosexual to come on the stage and do the same, and the female dancers simulate masculine sexual intercourse.
They are so "fetishised" that they made a pornography manga and anime video about them.
And the best of all is that people die to go and see them, they even dress like them when they were school girls. Even men do that, you should just see it: men with long-haired perukes, mini-skirts, hahaha.

TATU isn't Rock! It's pop! The only song of theirs I know is about a dildo (robot). Aria is your best bet.. if you are into alternative rock try out Okean Elzi (ocean of elzi), they are Ukrainian and post soviet but for alternative rock they are the real deal.
