At the beginning of The Guns of Navarone, what do they mean by "ευχαριστώ πολύ γεια σου"? Thanks very much... and what???

geia sou means both hello and goodbye. in that context i'd guess goodbye

But that's strange because this is a single phrase at the beginning of the film. Why would they say "Thanks very much good bye"? Something like "Thanks very much for your help" would have been more expected.
