My Mosin Nagant has seen better days...
Along the firing end of the barrel, a split has appeared and has started to move its way further along the rifle. Now it's almost split the top half of the wooden barrel in two. I have been told to use wood putty, but as i have never heard of it i don't know if it would be effective. Does anyone have experience in fixing this type of rifle ?

Can't help you with your Mosin Nagant!
On a slightly different note I used to enjoy firing a rifle, at targets, when I was in a country area.
I found that my aim improved considerably when I became fitter and reduced the size of my substantial stomach.
At the same time I was able to improve what I considered to be my somewhat florid prose style.

I am not a gunsmith but I own several firearms myself and I am familar with a wide variety of firearms and general maintenance and care of them. If you could upload some pictures or message them to me I could tell you whether or not it is something you could fix or should take to a gunsmith. I am a bit of a cold war history nut so I have shot on mulituple occasions the Mosin Nagant, SKS, AK-47, RPK, and AK-103. I have also fired the western guns Enfield, M1 Garand, M-14, M-16, FN-FAL, and CETME. Personally I love them all, but my heart will always go to the L1A1 SLR (British FNFAL) and AK-47. I currently own a Berreta Urika AL391 12 Guage Semi-Automatic Shotgun, Century Arms L1A1 Sporter (Pre-ban with a Imbel Reciever), and a Kimber 1911. I had a Polish Tantall (AK-74) for a short period of time but ended up selling it.

Shit, comrade! If I was a better gunsmith I probably could. We have a homemade Moisin-Nagant but I didn't realize it until I looked at it. I am no gunsmith, but I'd say there is little you could do except glue it, tape it, and possibly replace the stock with a synthetic one.
