Smile! As a bit of light relief (as ever ) I have upload a new page the library: A listing of as many different kinds of "smilies" as I could think of. The page can be found here, so if you spot any glaring omissions please e-mail them to me.

CCCP Website RingThe more observant of you may have noticed that a banner like "thing" has appeared on the bottom of the main page. This belongs to the CCCP site-ring. Essentially it is the same as the yahoo-webring except that yahoo doesn't run it, so we have far greater customisation over it. Anyway, it is there as a way of linking together related websites to our own. Either sites about the USSR, or communist websites, or sites run by members of our community.
Only time will tell how successful (or not) it will be but I'll be giving it a chance to prove itself as a good link exchange method.

One Year of Soviet-Empire.com!Yup that's right folks, though it seems like only yesterday that the first web page was uploaded soviet-empire.com has now been running for one whole year! Well I could waffle on and on about all the cool stuff we have done and how incredibly cool we are... but I wont. I'm going down the pub with A_Monk.
Be cool, go down the pub and drink to soviet-empire.com!

Caption competition #2!Last week on the discussion forums we ran our second caption competition and received loads of suggestions! Certainly more than the first one, and I had some serious difficulty in selecting a winning caption because there were so many of good quality. Just a few of those I'll share with you now...
"Annoyed he'd lost count of the holes again, Frederick threw the net to the floor disgustedly" "Ahhh - HERE is the problem - he MALLOC'ed a 1024 byte array for 2048 byte structure..." "Crowd Control At A Weatus Gig" "Jack couldn't find any porn on the net"
Plus Sergei had me reaching for the dictionary... "Misha vowed to KILL that proctologist..."
I had to get my sister to help me select a winner this time, and we both liked this one:

"Upset that everyone was making fun of his new sandals, Phill laid a trap" - Comrade A Monk
So comrade A_Monk strikes again, no doubt to the mild annoyance of comrade Soviet Behemoth who has vowed to dethrone him from the position of caption competition "old master". Also after chatting to comrade joeSTAR on the weekend I've decided to make this an irregular feature that could strike at any time, or be dormant for a whole month or more. The reasoning being simple: regular features get boring!

PRNSE: End of a Chapter in History"At 12 noon today, the now former Peoples Republic of the Soviet Empire came to a standstill as never before. Across the nation workers stopped working, school children stopped learning, soldiers stopped marching. Cars pulled to the side of the road, trains halted in their tracks, boats stopped their engines, not a single aircraft took off. Those at home gathered around their T.V sets, others went to ceremonies in person.
At 11:30, all the nations television and radio channels switched to coverage of Red Square in the former capital Kraznograd. Large crowds had gathered and high ranking officials had taken their usual place above the empty mausoleum. The ceremony began with a parade. Tanks, personnel carriers, missile launchers and of course troops all marched past. They held their heads high and marched like never before. The soldiers seemed to have a spring in their step and it was possible to see the pride in their faces as they saluted the flag. By 11:50, with the parade over, it began to snow , not a single person was seen to seek shelter. Though a microphone was set up, the long awaited speech never came. The crowd of thousands stood silent for 9 minutes waiting, watching, wondering. At 11:59, all of a sudden, the army band struck up the internationale. The large flag in the centre of the square began its slow descent. All eyes were fixed as it made its way down the ornate pole. Many had tears in their eyes. Throughout this wait, nobody moved. Finally, after what seemed like a lifetime, 2 soldiers folded the flag. They marched across the huge square, which had again fallen silent. When they reached the mausoleum they placed the flag inside, swung round and marched back to their unit. With this action completed and the entire crowd silent, all eyes turned to the mausoleum. Nobody came forward and for a second it seemed like nobody knew what to do. Then the officials all walked down from the podium, into the crowd and simply disappeared.
Nobody knew what would happen next, the whole crowd seemed to hold its breath. Then the band began playing a popular piece of music, trucks rattled into the square carrying every imaginable type if alcohol and fireworks suddenly exploded overheard. A cheer rose up from the crowd as they surged forward. Although these events took place almost 12 hours ago, the party is still in full swing and has in fact extended to the rest of the city. All across the former empire, similar parties have started. It has been hailed as the largest street party the world has ever known.
It would seem that although it will soon be history, the former PRNSE is going out with a bang.
Martin McClain, ABC News, former Kraznograd."
Sorry about that. Just daydreaming again.

Soviet Weaponry Section Gets New LookI've updated the USSR weaponry section of the website with the new look and layout that I've been working on this past week. If all goes according to plan (which it usually doesn't) I'll update the rest of the website by the end of next week and then link a new start page on the front of the site.

PRNSE Bites the DustThe following post was just made on the discussion forums by myself:
Okay guys, Time's up
It has been three weeks since the PRNSE "came back" and there hasn't really been much happening here. Red Liberator is the only person who has put any effort in at all.
While it's unfortunate if the Premier and General secretary have any real world commitments that prevent them from working on the PRNSE, clearly this situation cannot continue.
Things have proceeded exactly as I thought, those involved with the PRNSE (R-Lib probably excluded) have spent almost no time working on the PRNSE and have diverted some of what little time they have into other micro-nations.
Therefore:
Anyone who wishes to continue with micro-nationalism I suggest you go join a micro-nation. Soviet-Empire.com is no longer providing services for micro-nationalism.
If any of you wish to continue with the PRNSE as a micro-nation then you are free to use the name PRNSE and create your own community.
Soviet-Empire.com plans to introduce a simulation of the former USSR sometime in the New Year. Until then this forum will remain open for general discussion.
I feel a little sorry for comrade Red Liberator for the work he has put in this last three weeks for the PRNSE. But as Comrade Andropov mentioned to me on ICQ, if he wants to continue with micro-nationalism he will probably be the leader of its socialist movement.

Caption Competition WinnerFollowing some hilarity I have settled on a winner for the caption competition. Some of the suggestions were really excellent; of the ones that made me really laugh here are some of (what I think are) the best:
"Both men turned towards the enemy. Then came the fatal words: Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes!"
"It was only after Julian had urinated that Bert realised that being buried next to him was not such a good idea."
"Later that day, it dawned on Ernie that Nikita had been DEAD serious"
But the winner has to be:

"The following morning, Bert realised it wasn't Ernie he'd slept with" - A_Monk
Congratulations to comrade A_Monk! You win absolutely nothing!

Discussion Forums heading for the cute life? The launch of the new website format on the discussion forums has met with a considerable degree of approval, with comments such as "This place is stunning" - Sergei and "a lot better. A lot more... uh... brighter and cheerful" - Red Celtic. Or alternatively (as ever ) from A_Monk "wow... I do wish you'd tell me before you do these things... Y'know I hate surprises".
As the new forum look on the forums is intended to match that of the new website when it is opened chances are people will like that too (fingers crossed). All those who have had a sneak preview of the new site so far have liked it.
Just recently there have also been spontaneous posts in the middle of threads saying how things seem to be getting back to how they were in the good old days, which is surely a good sign for the future. Only Captain Hero can stop us now!

Siberian Construction MeetingComrades A_Monk, jT and Siberian Fox who have formed a loose cooperative called "Siberian Construction" to run the website met at the local pub last night to discuss the days events and implications that they might have for soviet-empire.com. After spending some time talking about the horror of what had happened in New York and Washington attention turned to how this might affect our website.
It had been planned to build a full simulation of the former Soviet Union online, however, given that now is a time for supporting our national governments which give us the freedom to build websites such as this one it did not seem proper to begin a simulation that could be interpreted as anti-democracy or anti-West in nature. In the coming months it is possible that anything deemed to be anti-democratic or anti-capitalist will come under attack from individuals either verbally or though more malicious means. Therefore the new U.S.S.R. website is to only be a place where people may learn about the old Soviet Union and meet to talk on the discussion forums. There will not be any 'governmental' element to the community.
Also discussed was the PRNSE and its website. One of the options considered was to give its current leadership the full intellectual rights to it and allow it to completely break away from Soviet-Empire.com. In this scenario the PRNSE would still be welcome to be linked with Soviet-Empire.com as a 'S.S.R.' but would maintain it's own website on a separate server.
No final decision has been made and it will naturally require some discussion with various members of the community.

Caption competition postponedThe caption competition, which began in earnest last night, was today put on hold as a mark of respect for those effected by the tragic events unfolding in the United States of America.
Several days ago comrade Sergei began a thread in the "Command Tent" forum in which he posted some pictures of Russian soldiers. The thread then 'drifted' (as most do) and ended up with people trying to make up the funniest caption to the pictures. Because of the resulting hilarity it was decided to make the caption competition a weekly feature on the forums, and the first competition began last night.
However, with the destruction of the world trade centre, damage to the pentagon (where a relative of one of our comrades works) and the large number of American comrades in general it did not seem fitting to continue. Therefore the competition thread has been locked for the time being as a mark of respect.

Freedom of speech by e-mailThe Following special announcement was just made to the national yahoo-group:
Party Comrades,
In the interests of both fostering freedom of speech and also reducing bureaucracy I will be making the following major changes to this e-mail group:
1) All members will be unsubscribed from the group.
2) The posting options will be changed to allow anyone to e-mail everyone else.
3) Anyone will be allowed to start a poll
4) The join options will be changed to allow anyone to join.
This will allow those that wish to conduct discussion via e-mail rather than the forums to do so whilst not suddenly spamming those that do not wish to do so with many e-mails. Also it will speed up the citizenship process by not requiring new people to be added manually to the yahoo group.
Current plans are to add a private voting feature for citizens only to the soviet-empire.com website as an addition to the citizens list within a few months.
To re-join the group please visit: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/the_prp/
Regards, Comrade Siberian Fox (Webmaster)
