Su-33 'Flanker-D'
Development/History
Development of the Su-33 began in 1976. Based on the Su-27, it has folding wings, a tail hood, and is immediately distinguishable by its foreplanes. The prototype flew for the first time on 17 August 1987 as the T-10K/Su-27K. Following carrier trails in 1989, production aircraft came off the production line the following year and by 1992 they achieved an initial operational capability. An initial batch of 20 Su-33s were ordered and have been seen operating on the Russian navy carrier Kuznetsov, but further orders are uncertain.
