MiG-31 'Foxhound'

Development/History

The MiG-31 was designed as a long range interceptor to rreplace the Su-15 and MiG-23 in what was a key role for the PVO. Initially designated as the Ye-155MP and first flown on 16 September 1975, production commenced in 1979. The first regiments became operational in 1982. As with the MiG-25, from which the Ye-155MP was developed, a series of record-breaking flights were made. The Ye-155M was modified to Ye-266M and pushed the records still further. Typical was the 30,000 m (98,424 ft) time-to-height which was recorded to 3 min 9.85 seconds. Absolute height was raised to 37,650 m (123,624 ft)
